ESL (English as a Second Language) - All Levels
Duration: 3 months : Monday- Thursday am/ pm options, weekend option TBD
Format: 2.5 hour virtual sessions
Target Audience: Newcomers, permanent residents, adult learners
Program Overview:
This multi-level ESL program supports adult learners, including newcomers and internationally educated professionals, in developing English language proficiency for everyday communication, community integration, academic pathways, and employment readiness. Aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), the curriculum is delivered in progressive modules from Beginner to Advanced levels, integrating listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through interactive, culturally responsive instruction.
Program Levels & Modules:
Level 1: Beginner (CLB 1–2)
Focus: Foundational language and survival communication
Modules:
• Alphabet & Phonics – Pronunciation, sound recognition, basic reading
• Basic Vocabulary – Greetings, numbers, days, family, colours, food, weather
• Simple Sentences – Subject-verb-object structure, yes/no questions
• Personal Information – Forms, ID, simple conversations
• Functional English – Asking for help, using public transit, shopping phrases
• Listening & Speaking – Basic instructions, repetition drills, role-playing
• Reading & Writing – Word recognition, filling out forms, short sentences
Level 2: High Beginner (CLB 3–4)
Focus: Everyday communication and personal expression
Modules:
• Daily Routines – Describing activities, habits, and preferences
• Descriptive Language – Size, shape, colour, condition
• Basic Conversation Skills – Asking for and giving directions, making requests
• Expanded Vocabulary – Health, housing, community services
• Reading Short Texts – Signs, labels, simple messages and notes
• Writing Practice – Short paragraphs, messages, personal letters
• Listening Skills – Responding to short dialogues, recognizing key words
Level 3: Intermediate (CLB 5–6)
Focus: Social and workplace communication
Modules:
• Conversation Strategies – Turn-taking, expressing opinions, agreeing/disagreeing
• Functional Writing – Emails, appointment scheduling, resumes (intro)
• Public Services – Understanding healthcare, school systems, banking
• Grammar Development – Verb tenses, prepositions, conjunctions
• Reading Comprehension – News articles, community bulletins, instructions
• Speaking Practice – Role plays, interviews, group discussions
• Listening for Detail – Recorded announcements, instructions, workplace conversations
Level 4: High Intermediate (CLB 7–8)
Focus: Academic and workplace readiness
Modules:
• Professional Communication – Business vocabulary, formal/informal tone
• Academic Reading & Writing – Paragraph structure, summaries, reports
• Advanced Grammar – Conditionals, passive voice, modals
• Presentation Skills – Organizing ideas, visual aids, public speaking
• Listening & Note-Taking – Lectures, meetings, phone conversations
• Civic Knowledge – Canadian laws, rights & responsibilities, multiculturalism
• Job Search Skills – Resume writing, cover letters, interview preparation
Level 5: Advanced (CLB 9–10+)
Focus: Professional fluency and academic success
Modules:
• Critical Thinking & Discussion – Debates, persuasive arguments, opinion essays
• Workplace Integration – Policies, teamwork, conflict resolution
• Advanced Writing – Essays, reports, research writing, referencing
• Public Speaking – Presentations, speech refinement, Q&A sessions
• Language for Higher Education – Academic vocabulary, referencing, editing
• Cultural Competency – Idioms, slang, nuanced expression, cultural norms
• Digital Literacy – Online forms, email etiquette, research skills
Delivery Format:
• Synchronous (live Zoom sessions)
• Asynchronous (videos, quizzes, reading assignments)
• Interactive group work, breakout rooms, and project-based learning
• Optional one-on-one support and tutoring
Assessment & Progress Tracking:
• Formative assessments at each module milestone
• Summative assessments at end of each level (CLB-based rubrics)
• Personalized progress reports and learning goals
